GRIT is an album centered around the theme of overcoming self-doubt. The cover art features a figure in the clutches of a monster that represents self-doubt, as it is trying, and failing, to consume them. Inspired by a found photo of wheat paste street art and graffiti, this image seems like a perfect metaphor for the creative process for me and so many artists I know. This monster represents the pressure, doubt and anxiety that haunts the proverbial artist in the pursuit of creation. Sometimes, you might let the self-doubt beast get to you -- pressuring you, distracting you, nagging you -- to stop working or trying to stall your mind with writer's block as it hovers over you.

But, the GRIT is also what it takes to outlast those doubts, to keep moving forward through the fog of uncertainty, to make art at all costs despite the pressures of the world. That ability to keep challenging yourself and push past the desire to quit, using humor and humility and skill.

GRIT is also a reference to the dust and rawness of some of the album's tracks --- the relics of history, the dusty samples, the raw chops, the audio grittiness that exists as a record of the creative process. Some people call it imperfections, but I like to think of it as little notes from the past to encourage me to keep getting better.

Keep fighting your monsters, lean into your own GRIT and do what you do!
